The Craft of a Perfectly Made Bed in the Housewife Corner

The Craft of a Perfectly Made Bed in the Housewife Corner

Creating Your Ideal Bedroom Oasis

“You may concentrate on appearances all through the rest of your house, but in the bedroom, comfort should be supreme. I think that bedrooms should also be very intimate rooms—they should express your personal preferences in every way… Of all the rooms in the house, your bedroom is yours.” – Dorothy Draper, In the Pink

The bedroom is where a significant portion of our lives is spent dreaming. It’s essential that our bedroom provides comfort and is a place we eagerly anticipate retreating to. The first step to achieving this is by ensuring your bed is well-made.

A well-made bed brings a sense of calm to the room and creates an organized atmosphere. Walking into your bedroom at the end of the day and seeing a beautiful, neat bed can be immensely rewarding. You don’t want to add making your bed to a long to-do list, so I strive to tidy it as soon as I wake up. However, there are days when the dogs need to go out, or the baby is calling for her breakfast. On such occasions, I usually get the bed made within an hour of rising.

While I loved our old comforter and the softness of well-worn sheets, it was time for a change. Our bed should feel like a place where we spend 8-10 hours every night. The lumpy pillows and mismatched sheets had to go.

To transform your bed into an oasis you look forward to every day, consider these essential staples:

Quality Pillows Invest in good pillows—not the $3.00 ones you grab on Black Friday at Target. Find pillows that meet your preferences; you might want a firmer pillow or a soft feather one. Softer pillows tend to be thinner, while firmer options are thicker. Discovering the right combination for you can make a world of difference.

High-Quality Sheets… There’s nothing quite like slipping into fresh, clean sheets after a nightly shower. Look for sheets with a high thread count for extra softness and avoid flannel as they tend to pill after a few washes.

Comforter and Duvet… A down comforter offers unparalleled coziness—it’s as if you’re being wrapped in a warm hug. Once you’ve experienced it, you’ll find it hard to return to a regular bedspread. I like to encase all my comforters in attractive duvets, making the room feel more inviting. If you share your bed with pets, using a duvet will help keep your comforter smelling fresh.

Mattress and Pillow Protectors… Protect your sleeping investments from spills, sweat, and dirt. These are non-negotiable if you’re spending money on quality pillows and mattresses; they help to keep them looking brand new.

Decorative Pillows… These are for fun! They not only unify the room’s aesthetic but also add a wow factor. Look for pillows featuring buttons, sparkle, or unique textures to enhance your space. Just remember to remove them before using the bed—they’re like mom’s fancy guest towels; they’re there to look pretty, not to be used!

Ultimately, your bedroom is your sanctuary; if it soothes your soul and relaxes your body, that’s all that truly matters. Happy dreaming!

Happy Sleeping!
